LaSER security policy researcher Roberts Kits has published an opinion article on Delfi analysing the key security and defence policy issues that should receive attention from society and policymakers as elections approach.

In light of Russia’s ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine and the growing security challenges in the region, defence policy remains one of Latvia’s most important national priorities. Roberts Kits highlights that Russia’s long-term preparations for confrontation with NATO require not only continued investment in the development of military capabilities but also a consistent and strategic approach to strengthening national security.

In the article, the expert notes that Latvia has significantly increased defence spending in recent years; however, the full development of military capabilities is a long-term process. Therefore, it is essential not only to allocate the necessary resources but also to establish clear priorities, strengthen the resilience of the defence system, and promote public understanding of security challenges.

Roberts Kits emphasises that during the pre-election period, security and defence issues require particular attention, with a focus not only on political commitments but also on the ability to implement long-term strategic objectives in an increasingly complex security environment.
