On April 28th, the latest policy review “Reform Opportunities for Latvia’s Healthcare System: Lessons from the Netherlands” was presented at the Pauls Stradiņš Museum of the History of Medicine.

The event opened with a presentation by the report’s author, former Prime Minister of Latvia, Einars Repše, followed by an expert panel discussion. The discussion featured Einars Repše, Boriss Kņigins (Deputy State Secretary for Financial Affairs at the Ministry of Health), Lauris Vidzis (Chairman of the Board at Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital), and Jānis Birks (Board Member of the Latvian Health Care Employers’ Association).

The goal of the policy review “Reform Opportunities for Latvia’s Healthcare System: Lessons from the Netherlands” is to provide an in-depth look at how the Dutch healthcare system functions, how it was reformed, and what outcomes those reforms have delivered. The report evaluates the transformation of the healthcare system in the Netherlands – particularly its shift to a regulated market-based model – and explores which insights, structural innovations, and best practices could be relevant and adaptable to the Latvian context in order to improve the accessibility, efficiency, and sustainability of Latvia’s own healthcare system.
