Today, 17 April, the LaSER think tank held its forum at the Latvian National Museum of History, where it presented its latest report, “Latvia’s Political System“. The report is authored by Daunis Auers, Ieva Hofmane, Jānis Ikstens, Valts Kalniņš, Harijs Kārkliņš, Evija Kļave, Ivo Rollis, and Visvaldis Valtenbergs.
The forum featured presentations of the report’s key findings, conclusions, and recommendations, followed by discussions with leaders of Latvia’s major political parties and prominent figures in contemporary Latvian politics. The discussions focused on the main obstacles limiting the effectiveness of Latvia’s political system, as well as practical solutions for strengthening decision-making and enabling the implementation of ambitious reforms.
The report provides a comprehensive analysis of Latvia’s political system, covering society, political parties, the electoral process, the Saeima, the government, and the public administration. Its central finding is that the primary challenge facing Latvia’s political system is not a lack of ideas, but rather a lack of implementation capacity. Reforms are often either not implemented or fail to deliver the expected results, creating a gap between public expectations and actual performance.
