LaSER Latvijas Stratēģijas un Ekonomikas Risinājumu Institūts

This summer, LaSER welcomed Yasha Mathew Shaw, a second-year Stanford University student studying computer science with a focus on artificial intelligence.

Yasha’s interest in emerging technologies began long before university. While still in high school, he participated in research at the California Nanosystems Institute at UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles), working alongside researchers on nanotechnology and entrepreneurship projects. The experience introduced him to problem-driven research and interdisciplinary collaboration, an approach that continues to shape his work today.

Choosing LaSER for his summer internship combined two personal interests. As someone with Latvian family roots who has visited the country throughout his life, the internship offered an opportunity to experience Latvia beyond brief family visits. Professionally, he was eager to explore how emerging AI technologies can be translated into practical solutions for real-world challenges.

During the internship, Yasha contributed to Project Hologram, a research initiative at the intersection of artificial intelligence and defense focused on applying machine learning to the predictive analysis of UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) activity in the Baltic region. Combining advanced AI methods with the expertise of LaSER defense researcher Roberts Kits, the initiative examines how predictive models can enhance situational awareness and support evidence-based decision-making in an evolving security environment.

Perhaps the most significant outcome of the internship was not technical but personal. Before arriving at LaSER, Yasha viewed himself primarily as an AI generalist fascinated by the technology itself. Over the course of the internship, however, his perspective broadened as he explored how emerging technologies can be applied to contemporary security challenges. Reflecting on the experience, he admitted, “I never thought I’d be so interested in defense.”

The internship also differed from his previous experiences through its collaborative working environment and close interaction between researchers with different areas of expertise. He particularly appreciated the opportunity to work directly with stakeholders while contributing to defense research. 

Outside the office, spending two months in Riga allowed Yasha to experience the city beyond the short family visits of his childhood. He was particularly impressed by Latvia’s evolving food scene and enjoyed observing how the country continues to grow and become increasingly international while preserving its distinct cultural identity. 

Looking ahead, Yasha hopes to continue exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence and defense. Although he remains open about where his academic journey will lead, the experience confirmed his interest in applying emerging technologies to real-world problems.
