At the LAMPA Conversation Festival, LaSER security policy researcher Roberts Kits participated in the discussion “Baltic States – Between Cooperation and Competition”, joining other experts in analysing the dynamics of relations between the Baltic states and the challenges shaping the region’s future development.
In recent years, cooperation between the Baltic states has become increasingly important in the fields of security and defence, strengthening the region’s role within the European and transatlantic community. At the same time, each of the three countries continues to pursue its own national priorities, seeking opportunities for economic growth, international positioning, and attracting investment.
The discussion explored how the Baltic states can make the most of their shared advantages while maintaining the ability to compete and develop their individual strengths. Particular attention was given to how the changing security environment influences the need for closer regional coordination and joint action.
During the discussion, Roberts Kits highlighted the importance of the security dimension in Baltic cooperation, emphasising that a common approach to defence and security challenges is a key prerequisite for strengthening regional resilience and increasing the Baltic states’ international influence.
The discussion was moderated by Una Aleksandra Bērziņa-Čerenkova, Director of the Latvian Institute of International Affairs and Director of the RSU Centre for International Studies. The panel also included Inna Šteinbuka, Member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences and Professor at the University of Latvia, and Jolanta Nagle, Director of the Riga Lithuanian Secondary School.
